Troy School District ESL Program
ELLs (English Language Learners) recieve a broad spectrum of individualized
specialized services based on their individual needs. These services
currently range from language development instruction to content area
support in the classroom as well as other appropriate instructional
and support services. The District's ESL program includes four basic
componets:
English as a Second Language (ESL) Instruction
This program uses ESL to develop the student's ability to effectively
listen, speak, read, and write in English and is intended to provide
the students access to the District's core curriculum. Instruction is
provided by ESL teachers while support services may be provided by ESL
paraprofessionals/aides or other appropriate staff. A total language
approach is used for ESL instruction by the ESL staff in grades K-12.
Reading/Language Arts
The ESL education program supports the reading/language arts curriculum
established by the District. The goal of the program is to assist the
ELLs acquire a functional level of English proficiency in order to
be successful in the general education language arts curriculum. The
ESL teacher will assess students and provide a recommendation for placement.
Content Area Instruction
Content area instruction is based on the District's general education
curriculum, which is modified to meet academic needs of ESL students.
Subject matter content is taught in ESL Sheltered classes where an ESL
paraprofessional and a teacher work as a team supporting the students
in their learning.
Cultural Awareness
Cultural awareness in incorporated into the curriculum of the Troy
School District. This curricular strand reflects aspects of the total
community with emphasis on the ESL student's background, language, and
cultural traditions. This focus not only assists the ESL student in
developing a positive self-concept but in addition assists all students
to develop an international perspective. With community, parental and
staff involvement, activities will be integrated throughout the district.
