13 Little Blue Envelopes -Maureen Johnson
This is the perfect example of teen chick lit. If you want a light, fun read where you don’t get weighed down by philosophy, yet don’t get bored by the shallowness of the characters, then this is perfect for you. Johnson sends her teen protagonist on a completely unlikely jaunt through Europe, where she discovers the beauty of different cultures and her own personal power to be independent and take on the bold. Of course, she meets a boy and falls in love – but that takes a backseat to the main thrill of traveling and experiencing cultures across Europe. What makes it so obviously a light read is the unlikelyhood of the plot, but you understand why Johnson decides to do this; it is not about the plot, but the experiences. By the time you finish the book, you will feel as though you yourself have a taste of Europe. I would definitely recommend it for a summer read on the beach (or by the pool J).
