Chobits - CLAMP
A manga series 13 books long by the wonderful girls at CLAMP, Chobits is a fan favorite for many. Set in the future, or perhaps another world altogether, technology has improved to the point where computers have been replaced with humanoid counterparts called 'persocons', laptops are simply smaller versions of persocons, and PDAs are reminiscent of key chains.
Enter Hideki Motosuwa, 19 years old, is attending cram school while working at a club. He can barely afford text books, but still he dreams of having a computer of his own. Of course, he knows you don't just find persocons lying around on the street. At least that was what he thought until he found one lying in an alley by his work. Naturally he takes her home and fixes her up. She's a bit odd, however, and seems to be a bit broken. The only word she seems to know is 'chi', which is what Hideki decides to name her. Hideki, of course, is what his friends call technologically inept. Going from friend to friend he tries to figure out just what this persocon he has found is, slowly realizing that Chi is far from broken. In fact, she functions far above any of the persocons his friends have. He hears a rumor that she might be a 'Chobit', legendary computers with the ability to feel and express human emotions. Could that be it?
The entire series has a mixture of both innocent and perverse humor, sentimental enough for a girl but also geared toward teenage boys, need I say more? The series is endearing, though, and well worth the read.
