Circle the Soul Softly

Circle the Soul Softly - Davida Will Hurwin

This is a really well-written book. You can tell Hurwin did her research…and I won’t tell you on what issue because that would entirely ruin the book for you. However, it’s not a terribly huge shock when you discover her teenage girl protagonist’s issues – the shock comes from how well it is handled. Hurwin writes in a realistic style and keeps the plot from overwhelming the reader; new girl in town, new girl meets boy, boy and girl fall in love, girl has issues. Nevertheless, it’s the insight of the protagonist herself, as well as her family background (dead father, marrying mother, kindly soon-to-be-step-dad) that adds to the depth of the story. Hurwin knows her teen girl psyche well, never under or over playing/dramatizing the events and emotions, but keeping it very realistic. As you read this, you can feel yourself enter the character and relate – as well as leave the book feeling as though you have honestly learned about an “issue” (sorry…I just can’t bring myself to give it away J).
