Core Documents of U.S. Democracy
An electronic collection of current and historical United States government documents which define the American democracy. These legislative and legal, regulatory, presidential, demographic, and economic documents are selected and authenticated by the Government Printing Office's GPO Access service. Includes the Bill of Rights, Constitution, Federalist Papers, and statistical reference sources.

The Debates in the Federal Convention of 1787
James Madison earned the sobriquet "Father of the Constitution" for his role in crafting the document adopted in 1787. This site from the Constitution Society provides an annotated version of Madison's journal, which is a more complete documenting of the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia than the official record. The editor notes corrections or changes to the transcribed text.

Alexander Hamilton: The Man Who Made Modern America
A companion to an exhibit from the New-York Historical Society, which "acquaints visitors with a statesman and visionary whose life inspired discussion and controversy and shaped the America we live in two hundred years after his death." Features a timeline, brief information on Hamilton's contemporaries, and the "Hamilton Log" where "each week, ... [the site posts] a new excerpt of historical prose or recount[s] a pivotal event" from Hamilton's life. Includes images.

The Papers of John Jay
This digitized collection of the papers of the first Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court and two-term governor of New York includes documents held at Columbia University and several other institutions. It is searchable by name of the writer, name of the recipient, date of composition, name of holding institution, and accession number. The site also has a biographical essay, four other background essays, and a bibliography.

Century of Lawmaking for a New Nation: U.S. Congressional Documents and Debates, 1774-1873
This site "brings together online the records and acts of Congress from the Continental Congress and Constitutional Convention through the 43rd Congress, including the first three volumes of the Congressional Record, 1873-75." The Thomas Jefferson Papers
The complete Thomas Jefferson Papers from the Manuscript Division at the Library of Congress consists of approximately 27,000 documents. This is the largest collection of original Jefferson documents in the world. Document types in the collection as a whole include correspondence, commonplace books, financial account books, and manuscript volumes. The collection is organized into ten series or groupings, ranging in date from 1606 to 1827.
