This group "is the largest severe mental illness charity in the UK." It is "dedicated to improving the lives of everyone affected by severe mental illness." The site features basic information about types of mental illnesses (such as schizophrenia and depression), treatment options (such as medications, cognitive therapy, and psychotherapy), living with mental illness, and more. Some materials apply only to the United Kingdom.


Screening for Mental Health, Inc. (SMH)
The site for a non-profit organization "developed to coordinate nationwide mental health screening programs and to ensure cooperation, professionalism, and accountability in mental illness screenings." Information and sample tests about alcoholism, anxiety, depression, suicide, and eating disorders are included, with extensive links for each topic.


Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW)
MIAW "is an annual national public education campaign [in late September through early October] designed to help open the eyes of Canadians to the reality of mental illness." Its site features quick facts, articles, and links to related sites about mental health in Canada; and material about the observation of the week, such as profiles of Canadians with mental illnesses. The Lock-Up Society
"As the new millennium began, the number of Americans behind bars passed two million — five times the inmate population in 1972. Features reports on "life after prison," the corrections industry, and prisoners with mental illnesses. Includes program transcripts and audio clips, statistics, slide shows, and related resources.


Mental Health Foundation: Information
"Our information on mental health covers: how to get help, general information about mental health, specific problems, issues and treatment options, news articles, organisations and events. We also run bulletin boards and forums for discussion about mental health issues and publish personal stories." The site is owned by the Mental Health Foundation, a charity organization in the United Kingdom.


A Mind of Their Own
This companion site to an American RadioWorks program that looks at bipolar disorder in children features articles on recognizing bipolar disorder ("a relatively new and controversial diagnosis for children"), treatments, and social interactions of children with the illness. A Brilliant Madness
Site provides a biographical portrait of Nobel Prize-winning mathematician John Nash. Includes suggestions for further reading, an overview of game theory, excerpts from an in-depth interview with Nash, timeline on the history of treating mental illness, and a teacher's guide. April 28, 2002 is the first airing of this program, a part of the PBS television series American Experience .


MindZone: A Mental Health Site for Teens
This site aimed at teenagers offers personal stories and suggests strategies for coping with mental health disorders. Visitors may take part in polls, learn about personal strengths and how to deal with emotions, find facts about anxiety disorders, and question experts. Content at this site is "reviewed by a psychiatrist specializing in child and adolescent care." From the Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands.


National Alliance on Mental Illness
This organization has created a helpful and timely resource for professionals, patients, and interested bystanders as well. The fact sheets provide concise summaries of disorders while the sections for education and research include the latest word on disorders, medication, and research. "Advocacy" provides information on legal rights.


National Comorbidity Survey (NCS)
"The baseline NCS ... [1990-1992] was the first nationally representative mental health survey in the U.S. to use a fully structured research diagnostic interview" to assess the prevalence of mental health disorders in the U.S. The NCS Replication survey (NCS-R) was released in June 2005. The site includes a bibliography of publications and a link to NCS data. (NCS-R data is scheduled to be available in 2006.) From the Harvard School of Medicine.


NIMH: National Institute of Mental Health
This site is about mental health: depression, anxiety and panic disorders, Alzheimer's disease, learning disabilities, autism, schizophrenia, and other illnesses. It contains information for researchers, practitioners, and the general public. Information includes news, events, grants, contracts, committees, research, clinical trials, funding opportunities, and links to other NIMH programs. Searchable. The Hoarding of Animals Research Consortium
A collection of resources designed "to increase awareness about a complex [mental] disorder," which is characterized by keeping "more than the typical number of companion animals ... [the] inability to provide even minimal standards of nutrition, sanitation, shelter ... [and the] denial of the inability to provide this minimum care." the Anxiety Panic Internet Resource (tAPir)
tAPir is a "self-help resource for those with anxiety disorders," panic attacks, phobias, extreme shyness, obsessive-compulsive behaviors, etc. This grass-roots site provides an index and archive of anxiety-related information on the Web, self-help and professional resources, and online support forums. It "educates users about anxiety's causes and treatments" and "works against the social stigma of mental health illnesses."

Mental Health: A Report of the Surgeon General
This 1999 Surgeon General's report "found that, even though a great deal was already known about how to treat mental illness, much remained to be learned. ... The groundbreaking report also found that, although a range of effective treatments existed ... nearly half of all Americans with severe mental illnesses failed to seek treatment." Child and Adolescent Bipolar Foundation (CABF)
This national organization seeks to educate professionals and the public about early-onset bipolar disorders. It provides information on the disorders as well as links to medical websites, related organizations, online audio and video presentations, full-text articles and abstracts of scientific and professional journals, and new research findings.


What a Difference a Friend Makes
Website for a campaign "to encourage, educate, and inspire people between 18 and 25 to support their friends who are experiencing mental health problems." On this site "find tools to help in the recovery process, and you can also learn about the different kinds of mental illnesses, [and] read real-life stories about support and recovery." Death Penalty Information Center (DPIC)
Includes a database of all executions since 1976, searchable by name, year, age, race, gender, location, method of execution, and special factors. Also provides reports on issues such as innocence, juveniles, mental illness, and costs, as well as facts about death row, sentencing, data for individual states, and the history of the death penalty. Portions of the site also available in Spanish.


Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA)
This website includes lots of helpful information for people with mood disorders, including depression, bipolar disorder (manic depression), suicide, and clinical trials. You can find a local chapter, support groups, and links to physician directories and other resources.
