Sabriel

Sabriel, written by Garth Nix and the first installment in The Abhorsen Trilogy, is a very well-written book filled with fantasy, but so believable, it's a bit unnerving. The main character, Sabriel, is of the Abhorsen clan - a family that is compromised of necromancers who bind the dead in death, rather than bringing them back to life. She sets out to find her father, but finds herself in a power struggle that will affect the entire Old Kingdom, along the finding Mogget, a cat with a trapped evil spirit, and Touchstone, a young man who seems very reluctant to tell of his past. As these three work together to rescue Sabriel's father, they learn of the evil power that has trapped him in the first place, and how they must help defeat it. A page-turner by all accounts, Sabriel pulls you into not only the story, but the characters as well.
