Saving Francesca

Saving Francesca, written by Melina Marchetta, is yet another teen/coming of age book. I liked this one especially, however, because it really didn't spare the character any faults, making her a little more believable than some others. In this story, she has switched schools, and at first it seems to be harmful for her, not to mention that her mother has a nervous breakdown. However, as the story progresses, her new friends and family situation combined help her to break out of her shell and be more herself. Despite the many scenarios and actions that make this character realistic, there are others that seem to do the opposite. The less believable parts in the plot line are, perhaps, her emotions. Anyone's emotions would be spiraling out of control, but maybe hers were a little more so than others. She seems a little caught up in herself, not really seeing the issues that other people may have, too. There are a lot of tears for the characters, and maybe some of the highschoolers are, in the end, a little nicer than kids of that age normally would be (resulting in a few "cheesy" moments), but its a good, make you smile/pick you up book for when you're depressed or just feeling pessimistic becuase everything seems to always be ok for her, no matter what.
