The Bad Daughter

The Bad Daughter - Julie Hilden

This is a story of a young lady raised by two professional parents, until they divorced. Her dysfunctional, unloving mother raised Julie until she could escape when she left for Harvard. Except for her academic achievements at Harvard and then at Yale Law School, her relationships with others were tainted by her bitter feelings about her mother.

When Julie was at Yale her mother became terminally ill with Alzheimers. Julie decides to abandon her mother and ignore her aunt’s pleas to help care for her mother. Julie thought she could abandon her mother, escape her past and it would not influence her future relationships. In the end, Julie is torn with the decisions she made and she dedicates her book, “for my mother, much too late.”

I enjoyed the story and could understand how torn Julie must have been deciding to continue with her life decisions or put her career path on hold to take care of her mother. The problem I have with this book is the vivid descriptions of her sexual relationships.
