Career Exploration:
1. I know what training or degree is needed is for my job or career choice and where to attend to get the degree or training?

    2. I know what salary is earned for the career choice I am pursing?

    3. I know the hiring outlook for the career choice I am pursing?

    4. To learn more about a job, students can often arrange to meet someone in the profession to ask questions and spend a few hours with the person 
    (This is called an informational interview.)  I know how to use the internet find someone who is locally doing the job I'm interested in?

    5. I know how to call, write or email a person to request an informational interview?

    6. I understand the connection between the classes I am taking or could take and my career choice?

    7. If interested in the military, I know the websites to visit to explore this option?

    8. I have an adult person in my life that can help me make decisions about my future?

    9. I know where to sign up to attend Career Spotlights, when career speakers come into the building?

    10.   I know I can arrange to have Junior or Senior Co-op work experience in my schedule?
    (Students earn high school credit for their employment, leave school early to work and are paid.)

     A network of contacts can be used as references or can be used to assist me in job hunting.

    44.  I have saved my resume on my home computer/flash drive, O drive of school computer and have it stored my email account.
    Sometimes your home computer may have a virus and you won't be able to access your resume. 
    You can't access O drive of school files from home, so keeping it in your email account is a great idea too

    45. I know that work permits are in the Counseling Office? I know to return it to the Counseling office for a signature?

    46. I know that I need to turn in a work permit to my employer if I am under 18?

    47. I know how to use job search websites, newspaper classified ads and approach people in my personal network of contacts to find job leads?

    48. I know how to upload my resume to a job search website and have gotten permission from my parents to have my personal information on the internet?

    49.  I have the confidence to ask a business if they are hiring and ask for an employment application?

    50.  I have talked to my parents about transportation arrangements and hours that I can work before I begin job hunting?

    51. I know where my social security card is? I know to put  the words "furnished upon employment" in the social security line of  my applications.

    53. If you don't have a license, do you have a picture ID?  Do you know where you get one?

    54. I am familiar with an I-9 Immigration Documentation form that I need to complete when I become employed?
    (you declare you are legally able to work in the US)

    55. I am familiar with knowing that I will fill out W-4 forms so an employer can take out necessary taxes from my paycheck.

    56. I have a bank account? and some employers will ask me to complete a Payroll Direct Deposit Form. 

    57. I know about the free Troy Career Center (on Stephenson Hwy & 15 Mile in Troy) and that it's resources for job hunting after high school for
          students over 18 years old?

 

    Post Secondary Schooling

    58. I have toured the school or training place where I might go for more schooling?

    59. I understand the connection between the classes I am taking or could take and what colleges require for admission?

    60. I know the minimum test score and GPA needed for my 4 year college choice?

    61. If you leave your 4 year "live away from home college" after year one, do you know what local community college choices are open to you? 

    62. Do you know how to research the costs & transfer requirements of classes between a  2year and 4 year college ?

    63. Do you know how to do an on line or paper college application?

    64.  I know how where the scholarship drawer in the Career Room is located?

    65. I  know how to use my college website to access scholarship info?

    66. I know what 1 year of college costs? (tuition, room & board, books)?

    67. I have talked with my parents about how my education will be financed? And the portion that I will contribute

    68.  I know how to go the FAFSA web site (Free application for federal student aid) web site and where to click to begin an application?
     I know both me and one of my parents need to apply for a PIN  number.  A PIN number is for your electronic signature.
      I know that there is a free workshop held in Feb. at OCC if my parents need help completing the FAFSA application

    69. I know how to create a fastweb free scholarship search account?

    70. I know what to give a teacher, when I ask for a teacher letter or recommendation?

    71. I know if my college requires a letter of recommendation from a teacher or counselor?

    72. I know how to access the schedule of when college representatives come to visit THS?  Go to THS website, click on Guidance Office Update

    73. I plan to meet with college reps in the fall when they come into the building?

    74. I know how to check to see if my college does an on-site visit at my high school for admission?  I know how to sign up for an appt?

    75. I know the deadline date to apply to my college?

    76. I know that there is a College Night held at Athens in October and that it is for juniors and seniors at Athens and Troy High?

    77.  I have an appropriate email account name to use when I complete my college applications?

    78. I know if I pass the MME, I qualify for $4,000 to use for Michigan tuition costs during my freshman & sophomore years of college?

15%     auto                 $313.00     Car payment ($82) + insurance ($70) + gas  ($40X4= $160)

5%       entertainment  $104.00    (26$ a week)

*** On this budget you aren't able to afford Cable TV.    What kind of car would you drive, if a car payment was just 82$ a month

  • Would you be able to only live on 58$ (8.50$ a day for food)?
  • Chances are you would have a roommate or live at home at this salary
  • Can you survive on 1 fill-up of 40$ in gas a week?
  • 26$ for the week for Entertainment ?  Can you have a good time on your budget?
