Troy 4 Colts Fight Cold to Beat Back Groves Hot on the heels of their scrimmage sweep of a double-header at home on April 1 over the State Champs from last season (Sterling Heights Stevenson), the Colts put together another team effort in a big win in extra innings on the road against Birmingham Groves High April 5. Troy won in 10 innings, 4-3. With temperatures hovering around freezing, and with the snow flying and a 25 mph breeze blowing in from left field, the Colts jumped on Groves for two quick runs in the first on RBI hits from Sautter and Aguirre. In all, Troy got hits from 7 different players (Sautter, Robinson, Pardun, Berti, Aguirre, Haggerty and Goan) during the game and got nothing short of great pitching from Ted Sautter (8 innings, no earned runs and only 2 hits allowed) and Casey Haggerty (2 innings, no runs and no hits allowed). Robinson got on base 4 times and scored twice, Aguirre drove in the winning run with a big sacrifice fly in his Varsity debut and Haggerty pitched nearly perfect baseball and got credit for the win in his first appearance. Casey's attempted sacrifice bunt in the top of the 10 th was so good it turned into a hustle base hit. The Colts also survived some early miscues in the field to make the big plays when they counted most down the stretch including a great throw and tag from Scott Nohl in right to Ryan Frasier at the plate to cut down what would have been the winning run in the bottom of the 8 th with the game tied at 3. After the Colts went on top to stay in the top of the 10 th (Aguirre Sac Fly to bring in Robinson), John Berti made a couple of huge plays including a diving stab and throw on a hard ground ball up the middle in the bottom of the 10 th to get the bang/bang out at first base and help to preserve the win for the good guys. These plays were all worthy of Sports Center Top10 highlight coverage! The boys battled hard and beat a very good team. The enthusiasm of the entire team, and their confidence in the clutch, was noticeable in spite of the harsh weather and the boys appear ready for the challenge of battling the top competition in the area.
